As a general rele the ranagatira (chief) carried the mere, or short club. The mere was carried thrust into the girdle of the piupiu or in a special war belt. The common characteristics of the mere is a flat, board blade with a rounded end made sharp enough to split the skull of a man or cause deadly injury to the neck or ribs.
